Insulation FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Discover answers to frequently asked questions about our insulation services to make informed decisions for your property.

How is spray foam different from traditional insulation?

The primary difference between spray foam insulation and traditional insulation materials like fibreglass or cellulose is that spray foam functions as both an air barrier and a thermal barrier. Closed-cell spray foam even provides a moisture barrier.

This means that spray foam insulation offers both insulation and air sealing in one product, whereas older insulation types do not prevent air from passing through. This capability is essential for creating a continuous and effective thermal and air barrier.

How is spray foam different in existing homes versus new construction?

For new construction or major renovation projects, we can insulate exterior walls using spray foam, or a combination of spray foam and traditional fibreglass batts, in a method known as “flash and batt.”

For existing homes, applying spray insulation in the attic, crawlspace, or basement can significantly enhance comfort and energy efficiency, even without insulating the walls. Insulating walls in existing homes can be invasive, so we focus on improving insulation at the top and bottom of the thermal boundary of the conditioned space to help clients achieve their goals without the disruption.

Is spray foam insulation safe?

Yes, spray foam is safe. However, some individuals may be sensitive to the fumes produced during the installation process, a phenomenon known as off-gassing. For this reason, we recommend that anyone living in the home vacate the premises once the spraying begins and remain outside for 12 to 24 hours after it concludes.

What about the “problems” with spray foam?

When chemicals are mixed correctly within the recommended temperature range and properly applied, allowing sufficient time for off-gassing, spray foam insulation should perform well without issues.

However, if the product is not installed correctly, it can lead to moisture problems, discomfort, and financial strain due to a lack of the expected energy savings.
